My journey
I was lying in bed this morning, anxious, alone (for once) and afraid. My ears have not stopped ringing for 6 days, constantly, all day and night. It is too coincidental timing for this not to be related to the fallout of Covid 19. I decided to do some breath work to see if I could affect my state of being. As my mind wandered almost immediately from the task at hand I started giving myself a hard time. What I was going through was minor in comparison to what a lot of people have to go through and besides although no known cure for tinnitus I have the tools to be able to manage this a lot better than I was. This was an obstacle to overcome not something to run away from. I resolved to meditate and journal morning and night in an effort to understand my mind and create more positive thought patterns.
The Brain
Your brain is like a snow-covered mountain and your thoughts are like snow mobiles carving their way through your mind. The more you have the same thought the deeper the crater it creates and the easier it is for your mind to slip back into it. By taking daily moments to be grateful and still, you can literally rewire your brain (neural plasticity.)
Now don’t get me wrong, as I was lying there coming up with this plan and trying to fill my mind with positive thoughts I discovered resistance, a lot. I was angry, upset and scared and when told to cheer up my minds response was, “fuck off!” Understandable actually, if I was in his position I think I would of felt exactly the same. I understand the irony of what I just said as I am actually talking about 2 parts of the same being, me. That is the point though, you don’t control your thoughts, they are part of you but you don’t get much of a choice in them, just how you choose to action them. You can though, it seems, influence them.
